Hawaiian Airlines will launch daily nonstop service between New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Honolulu starting June 4, 2012.

Union Pacific’s Historic Steam Locomotive No. 844 to Tour the Southwest

Union Pacific Railroad's iconic steam locomotive, No. 844, will travel through the Southwestern United States during fall 2011 to kick off state centennial celebrations in New Mexico and Arizona, respectively.

No. 844, the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific, will travel more than 2,900 miles from its base in Wyoming on a 32-day, nine-state tour that will honor the rich railroad heritage of the scenic Southwest.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Takes to Skies Oct. 1-9, 2011

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will celebrate its 40th event with 550 hot air balloons representing 20 countries, and honoring the person who started it all in 1972 Sid Cutter, the founder and "Father of Fiesta."

The 40th event will occur Oct. 1-9, 2011 at Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. New this year will be the Sandia Resort and Casino $100,000 challenge, the richest active prize in ballooning.

Restoring Texas’ San Antonio River Now 2 Miles Closer

Restoring the San Antonio River's ecosystem is two miles closer to its 2013 completion date following ceremonies held near Mission Concepcion on June 25, 2011 opening the initial two phases.

The project, a nearly $246 million river ecosystems restoration effort, is designed to restore the riparian habitat of the San Antonio River, reconnect the historic Spanish missions of the city to the river, and add over nine miles of hiking and biking trails that will connect the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River to the famed Riverwalk of downtown San Antonio.

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park on Memorial Day Weekend 2011 is restoring another tradition to post-Katrina New Orleans for travelers riding Amtrak's Sunset Limited.

Trails & Rails, a nationwide program that provides onboard education for Amtrak passengers, premiered on the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Lafayette, La. in 1994, staffed by rangers from Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Rail Road Opens for 2011 Season

Huffing and puffing its way along the track, a steam engine from the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Rail Road pulled away from the depot April 8, opening the attraction's 2011 season after heavy snow storms delayed the original start date.

Max Stauffer, owner of the popular historic railroad just south of the Highway 41 entrance to Yosemite National Park, had planned on opening March 19. The next day, however, a series of storms dropped anywhere from five to nine feet of snow along the four-mile route the train runs through the Sierra National Forest, he said.

Southwest Airlines Inspecting Boeing 737s, Canceling Flights After Hole in Aircraft Forces Emergency Landing

UPDATE: Southwest Airlines said on Monday it expected to cancel approximately 70 flights from its April 4 schedule as part of its ongoing inspection of Boeing 737 aircraft.

The airlines said passengers should continue to check www.southwest.com schedules before heading to the airport to get specifics about their particular flight. Southwest said it expects to complete the inspections of 79 Boeing 737 aircraft by late Tuesday.

ORIGINAL STORY: Southwest Airlines is working closely with federal agencies to determine the cause of a depressurization event on one of its Boeing 737s during a Phoenix to Sacramento flight on Friday that diverted to Yuma, Ariz., the airline said April 2.

Southwest expected to cancel approximately 300 flights on Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3, to accommodate the inspections. The Dallas-based airline said it is working to minimize customer delays as crews inspect the aircraft.

Frontier Airlines to Add Five New Routes, Three Cities

Denver, Colo.-based Frontier Airlines announced it is adding five new routes and three new cities, along with increasing its frequencies, as part of its summer schedule for 2011.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings, Inc., Frontier said it plans to add Knoxville, Tenn. (TYS); Provo, Utah (PVU) and Sioux Falls, S.D. (FSD) to its route map with the addition of nonstop service from its Denver hub.
