For many of us, living with February's snow, ice and bitter cold means spending your evenings and weekends inside. Oh sure, there's odd jobs to do, and if you're lucky enough to be a hunter you have the pleasure of sorting through your gear, reboxing shotgun shells, maybe touching up your decoys with a dab of paint, or organizing your hunting photos.

A Walk Down Memory Lane With My Childhood Heroes, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans

For me, Saturday morning television in the 1950s and 1960s always included Sky King, a few cartoons and the remarkable Roy Rogers and Dale Evans show. They were movie and recording stars long before the invention of television. Many from that era claimed that their movies always sold-out theatres during the days of black and white pictures.

America loved their message and longed for their next movies that co-starred Roy's horse Trigger, Dale's horse Buttermilk, Bullet their remarkable German shepherd and Nellybelle, their beat-up Jeep. This entire supporting cast is on display at the Roy Roger Dale Evans Museum in Branson, Mo.

Not Just Your Ordinary Hunting Camp

We were pheasant hunting in Iowa. Our hunting party, including several Nashville entertainers, had spent the day in the northwest Iowa native prairie grass strips of Loess Hills Preserve.

I was with Country music artists Andy Griggs, Jason Brown, Jason Meadows, Joel Brentlinger and Daniel Lee Martin, followed by his wife Stephanie, who shot video for their television show, "Back Stage and Back Roads with Daniel Lee Martin."

Iowa Pheasant: It Doesn’t Get Much Better

Rhythmic motion pulsated through stands of native prairie grass, molded from breezes perhaps touched by kindred spirits that once hunted the northwest Iowa plains. Native American tribes and settlers moving west searched these rolling hills for food. Competition was fierce.

A mature bald eagle circled high against blue matting, peering down at the line of hunters dressed in orange vests and hats. The great bird hunted the same prey-pheasants-and interference of his daily meal was not appreciated.
