Breaking News! Louis L’Amour Was Not the Last Western Writer http://www.oldwestnewwest.com/20081230173/people-lifestyle/writing-the-west/breaking-news-louis-lamour-was-not-the-last-western-writer.html http://www.oldwestnewwest.com/20081230173/people-lifestyle/writing-the-west/breaking-news-louis-lamour-was-not-the-last-western-writer.html I can't tell you how often this happens: I'm at a table signing one of my latest Westerns-historical fiction-when a potential buyer tells me, "Too bad Louis L'Amour's gone. Nobody writes Westerns any more."

Glad they can't see me bristle inside. I politely tell them, remind them, educate them, that indeed while it's too bad L'Amour's no longer around writing, there are writers penning Westerns and they are very much alive. Right now. Today. And darn good writers at that.

Tony Hillerman, a True Western Writer http://www.oldwestnewwest.com/20081108145/people-lifestyle/writing-the-west/tony-hillerman-a-true-western-writer.html http://www.oldwestnewwest.com/20081108145/people-lifestyle/writing-the-west/tony-hillerman-a-true-western-writer.html One of the things I remember most about Tony Hillerman was his ability to laugh at himself. For all the fame and fortune that came with his incredible story-telling ability, none of it was spent on self-aggrandizement. He truly was a "good ol' boy" from Oklahoma.

As a published writer myself, I was lucky enough to be in a First Friday group with him. This loosely-organized pool of published writers extends from Best Selling authors to one-book bottom-list writers. It didn't matter to Tony. He treated everyone the same.
