Following a goal to preserve America's history, cultural and natural heritage, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has designated 13 sites in the West as national historic landmarks and one additional site as a national natural landmark.

The 14 locations in the West, announced Oct. 17, 2012, were part of a total designation of 27 national landmarks across the country as places that possess exceptional value and quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the nation.

Denver has become one of the West's great destinations for holiday fun, and this year's festivities promise Christmas and New Year's treats with millions of twinkling lights, dazzling parades, outdoor ice skating, horse-drawn carriages, lively concerts and huge holiday theatrical productions.

There are special happenings in Denver every weekend of the holiday season through the end of January. More than 50 different events are listed on the Mile High Holidays website. Here's a sampling of some of the events waiting for residents and visitors to the Mile High City.
