Temporary repairs to the North Kaibab trail on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park are now completed and all restrictions have been lifted.

Permanent repairs to the third bridge north of Phantom Ranch, the National Park Service said, will take place this winter when flows in Bright Angel Creek are at their lowest and most stable.

Huffing and puffing its way along the track, a steam engine from the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Rail Road pulled away from the depot April 8, opening the attraction's 2011 season after heavy snow storms delayed the original start date.

Max Stauffer, owner of the popular historic railroad just south of the Highway 41 entrance to Yosemite National Park, had planned on opening March 19. The next day, however, a series of storms dropped anywhere from five to nine feet of snow along the four-mile route the train runs through the Sierra National Forest, he said.

Denver, Colo.-based Frontier Airlines announced it is adding five new routes and three new cities, along with increasing its frequencies, as part of its summer schedule for 2011.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings, Inc., Frontier said it plans to add Knoxville, Tenn. (TYS); Provo, Utah (PVU) and Sioux Falls, S.D. (FSD) to its route map with the addition of nonstop service from its Denver hub.

Virgin America, the California-based domestic airline, started San Francisco (SFO) service to Dallas-ForthWorth International Airport (DFW) today, Dec. 6, marking its second West Coast connection to the heart of Texas in less than a week.

On Dec. 1, 2010 the airline commenced services to DWF from Los Angeles International (LAX).

Virvin America celebrated the launch of its new upscale, low fare service to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) - the 12th airport in its growing network and first mid-continent destination.

The Hoover Dam bridge is open to vehicle traffic, and for travelers driving along the Nevada-Arizona border the overpass not only helps cut drive time between Las Vegas and Phoenix, but provides unique views of the dam, the Colorado River and Black Canyon.

Officially called the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, the new segment of US 93 officially - and without public fanfare - opened at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010.

The Hoover Dam Bypass, the longest and tallest single-span concrete arch bridge in the western hemisphere, finally is ready for cars, trucks and buses, ending what has been a major traffic bottleneck on U.S. 93 across the historic dam.

The bridge is expected to open for traffic some time during the week of Oct. 18. The exact day is being kept secret to avoid traffic snarls from those wanting to be among the first to cross.

The massive 1,900-foot-long bridge, part of a $240 million four-lane bypass, was dedicated Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood as more than a thousand of the workers who helped build it looked on.

A new visitor center and exhibit hall at Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado showcasing thousands of dinosaur bones opened Oct. 4, 2011, and is expected to thrill visitors to the historic site where dinosaurs once roamed over today's West.

The new Quarry Visitor Center replaces an old visitor center that was shut down in 2006 due to the structural instability.

A colorful Hawaiian blessing ceremony for the iconic 70-room Hotel Hana-Maui on Maui's secluded eastern shore Aug. 20 celebrated a new beginning for the hotel.

After undergoing a year-long $2.2 million renovation by the Archdiocese of San Antonio through funds raised by the Las Misiones Capital Campaign, Mission San José in San Antonio, Texas reopened Aug. 19, 2011.

Part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, the church at Mission San Jose is widely known as the "Queen" of Texas' 44 missions.
Completed in 1782, the front façade and famed "Rose Window" are regarded by art historians as some of the finest examples of European baroque architecture in the United States.

Nearly 300 persons attended the celebratory mass and luncheon. Festivities continued through the weekend with guided tours of the church, a chamber chorale concert on Saturday night, and the return of the Mariachi Mass on Sundays.

The Hyatt Regency Phoenix hotel has completed a $15 million renovation of its property in downtown Phoenix, Ariz. including a new lobby with a unique Southwest flair.

This top to bottom renovation included all 693 guestrooms, lobby and front desk, updated and expanded StayFit fitness center, 37,000 square feet of meeting space, and the hotel's rooftop revolving restaurant, the Compass Arizona Grill.

Repaving of the exterior observation deck area and pathways adjacent to the Jaggar Museum at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, part of the park's ongoing facility maintenance, is now underway.

The approximately 7,000 square foot repaving project will remove and replace the existing pavement in sections from the east side of the museum to the exterior museum bathrooms. Work began Aug. 22, 2011.

Construction for the Transbay Transit Center, San Francisco's new state-of-the-art, multi-modal transportation hub designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects started Aug. 11, 2010 with a groundbreaking ceremony and plenty of smiles from onlookers.

Scheduled to open in 2017, the landmark glass-and-steel structure will connect the City and the Bay Area via 11 public transit systems. Notably, the Transbay Transit Center will be the San Francisco station for California High Speed Rail and the first new high-speed rail station in the United States.

Virgin America, the California-based airline, celebrated on June 30 the launch of its first international city with new service to Toronto, Canada from two California cities, and set its sight on its next destinations.

The new Toronto service was celebrated on a flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) through San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The airline's Toronto schedule includes one daily nonstop and one daily through flight from San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Los Angeles International Airport achieved two major milestones May 24 with the successful completion of the $737-million LAX Tom Bradley International Terminal renovation project and the new $88 million Crossfield Taxiway for Super Jumbo jets.

The 40-month-long Bradley project, begun February 2007, included major interior renovations to airline check-in and passenger arrival lobbies; customs arrivals hall and new high-capacity baggage carousels; arrivals corridors, restrooms and boarding gates.

It's almost the Fourth of July and many families are thinking about picnics and summer trips to a National Park in the West. But at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington, celebrating the Fouth means there's still a little snow around.

Deep and persistent snow levels at higher elevations on Mount Rainier will delay the opening of the road to Sunrise until at least July 8.

Frontier Airlines is now offering daily service between New Orleans and Kansas City with one roundtrip flight, flown using the Embraer 170 aircraft, and the airline said that service between New Orleans and Denver will launch in June.

The new service linking Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is part of a significant growth period for the Denver-based carrier, which is growing by 7 percent in seat miles this year, making it the fastest-growing major carrier in the United States, the airline said.
