Day of the Dead
Saturday, October 29 2011, 3:00pm - 9:00pm
Hits : 0
Each year the Autry National Center in Los Angeles hosts its Day of the Dead festival, bringing to life the ancient Aztec ritual to both remember the dead and mock death itself.

This unique Day of the Day observance and celebration is a collaboration with Lore Productions and the Secretary of Culture's office of the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

¡Vivan Los Muertos! welcomes everyone to find out more about this extraordinary tradition while enjoying Mexican food, family activities, vibrant music and dance, elaborate altar displays, and an interactive community altar. Plus, artist Luis Villanueva will showcase his spectacular Day of the Dead crosses atop elaborately decorated altars.

The event begins with a sacred Aztec blessing by Danza Azteca Xocoyote followed by an extravagant Day of the Dead performance by Nueva Antequera Ballet Folklorico de Oaxaca.

With their elaborate traditional costumes and skull-painted faces, Nueva Antequera dancers will be accompanied by the musical groups Los Xochisoneros and Son de Oaxaca to bring to life the beauty of the celebration.

Director of Nueva Antequera Raul Cortes, together with Rogelio Santibáñez Arellanes from the Secretaría de Cultura de Oaxaca and his team of cultural consultants, will help create six elaborate altars and two community altars inside the museum in addition to collaborating on the traditional dances that are to be performed at the event.

Elaborate altars by local colleges Mt. St. Mary's College, Marymount College, Loyola Law School, and Loyola Marymount will welcome guests in the outdoor entrance. Community altars will invite visitors to honor their dearly departed by placing a photograph of their loved one on the altar.
