Despite Highway 1 Closure, Big Sur Campgrounds Remain Open

California State Parks is notifying hundreds of campers headed for the Big Sur area that although a portion of California's coastal Highway 1 is closed, all state park campgrounds remain open with all reservations honored.

Those campgrounds include Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park.
juliapfeifferburnswaterfallAs Caltrans has been reporting, a major portion of Highway 1, about 13 miles south of Carmel, between the Rocky Creek Bridge and the Bixby Creek Bridge, was damaged by what is being called a "crib wall" failure.

That failure dropped a major section of roadway into the sea. Caltrans estimates the roadway will remain closed for at least one month.

"Although coming down Highway 1 from the north will not be possible, the southern route remains open", said C.L. Price, the Big Sur Sector superintendent for California State Parks. "We would encourage people to keep their vacation plans and use the southern route. It's about three hours longer, but it is a spectacular stretch of coastline worth exploring on the way to Big Sur."

If campers holding reservations prefer not to make the longer journey to Big Sur, they can get refunds from ReserveAmerica.

Those choosing to keep the vacation plans and are traveling from northern areas of the State, can get to the southern route to Big Sur by traveling down Interstate 5 or State Highway 101 to Paso Robles and then turning west on Highway 46 toward the coast and Highway 1.
Along this route, there are many new vineyards and people could also plan a visit to Hearst Castle and the Elephant Seal beaches near the Castle.

If traveling the southern route, Price suggested that people fill up the gas tank before leaving the Cambria and San Simeon community areas along Highway 1.
