Photography Exhibit Showcases Beauty of Mojave National Preserve

If you will be traveling between Los Angeles and Las Vegas anytime soon, there's a great reason to stop for a couple of hours at the Mojave National Preserve and enjoy an excellent photographic exhibit at the Desert Fine Art Gallery at the Kelso Depot Visitor Center.

Running now through Nov. 16, the Mindful Presence exhibit showcases some of the works of noted Southwestern photographer Hamilton Moore of JumpingLion Photography.

Moore's photographs capture the beauty of the Mojave desert, from the vast expanse within the national preserve, to the tiniest of desert flowers. His photographs capture images most visitors never stop to see, such as the glint of water seen from a distant hilltop, delicate animal tracks deposited among shifting sands, or ancient evidence of previous desert dwellers.

Limited edition prints from the exhibition are available for purchase at the Western National Parks Association (WNPA) bookstore inside the
Kelso Depot Visitor Center. Proceeds from print sales will fund additional projects aimed at promoting the understanding and enjoyment of Mojave National Preserve.

The Mojave National Preserve is one of the National Park Service's more recent sites, and at 1.6 million acres, it is the third largest unit of the National Park System in the contiguous United States.

The preserve includes the renovated Kelso Depot, which serves as the primary Visitor Center. Former Union Pacific Railroad dormitory rooms contain exhibits describing the cultural and natural history of the surrounding desert. The baggage room, ticket office, and two dormitory rooms have been historically furnished to illustrate life in the depot in the first half of the twentieth century. A 12-minute orientation film is shown in the theater.

For information about the preserve, or the current exhibit call (760) 252-6100.

Southwest Plans Minneapolis-St. Paul Service

Dallas, Texas-based Southwest Airlines said it plans to begin service from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) in March 2009. The carrier has not released specific service details, saying only that it will begin a modest operation at MSP with flights to Chicago Midway only.

"Minneapolis-St. Paul's geographic location complements the vast Southwest Airlines network really well," said Gary Kelly, Southwest's Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO. "We have studied and been interested in serving this very popular market for quite some time, and we look forward to bringing our low fares and legendary Customer Service to the people of Minnesota."

Southwest plans to release more details of its future service to Minneapolis-St. Paul in the coming months.
